1968
MTD NZ Ltd was founded under the name Palmerston North Motors and until 1972 traded solely in used heavy vehicles.

1972

A franchise agreement with Mack Trucks Inc USA was obtained and that year production started in Palmerston North with the first Mack FR model truck to be assembled in New Zealand.

1973

A move was made from Matipo Street to the current site on Malden Street to accommodate a CKD product facility and the growing demand for the Mack product.

1984

A nationwide service network (Truck Stops NZ Ltd) was set up to provide parts and service for the large number of trucks working around the country.

1986

MTD was purchased by Corporate Investments Ltd to form part of the Truck Investments group, and that year MTD took over the Renault franchise for NZ.

2000

MTD closed down their Palmerston North CKD facility and began importing FBU Mack product from what was then Mack Trucks Australia Pty Ltd (now Volvo Group Australia). The Truck Investments group was purchased by Cycle & Carriage Ltd

2004

The Truck Investments group was sold to Sime Darby Berhad.

2009

MTD won the rights to represent Volvo Truck and Bus product in New Zealand which then gave us three of the four brands owned by Volvo Truck Group. Today MTD Trucks is a fully owned subsidiary company of Sime Darby Motors New Zealand.

2014

Volvo Trucks release the new Volvo FH and FH16 models in New Zealand. The new trucks feature state of the art safety features as well as Dynafleet – Volvo Trucks advanced telematics system, providing customers with a never before seen view of truck, driver and safety performance. By 2017 the new range of Volvo Trucks is the number one premium heavy duty truck in the New Zealand market.

2016

Kiwi driver Louise Marriot of Christchurch wins the New Zealand Volvo Trucks Drivers fuel challenge competition, earning the right to represent New Zealand at the world finals in Gothenburg Sweden, the home of Volvo Trucks. Louise ranks in the top 10 in the world then goes on to film a TV advertisement for Volvo Trucks driving the all new dual clutch transmission in Croatia. Louise is the first New Zealand driver to experience this ground breaking new gearbox.

2017

The new Volvo Crawler Gear option transmission is offered to the New Zealand market providing customers with super low gearing options offering world class start ability in challenging terrain and conditions. Logging customers quickly select this option to aid safety and reliability in off road conditions.

The Volvo FH16-750 sells in record numbers with Kiwi operators ordering more of this variant than ever before.

The new Volvo I SHIFT Dual Clutch transmission is launched in New Zealand as an option for the Volvo FH13 and Volvo FM. Customers quickly order this new option to further aid Volvo Trucks class leading driveability and fuel efficiency.

The Mack Superliner 8×4 hits New Zealand roads and provides customers with the highest production horsepower conventional truck option in the world. Logging and bulk transport operators add this unique model to their fleets. The conversion to 8×4 takes place at MTD’s modification centre facility in Palmerston North – the same facility that started the Mack Trucks journey way back in 1972.

2019

Volvo Trucks release the all new Volvo FM featuring a whole new cab shell modelled off the best selling Volvo FH series. The new truck offers class leading driver comfort and safety and orders quickly build well into the next 12 months.

Mack Trucks release the new Mack Anthem and sales start with a new and improved line up. A whole new driver experience includes a refreshed interior and dashboard along with steering wheel control for key driver functions, further enhancing safety.
